Religious Balancing In Leadership Positions Of The National Assembly.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, member-elect of the House of Representatives, says a northern Muslim should not be supported to become Senate president.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, who has been elected to the House of Representatives, has voiced his opinion that a northern Muslim should not be considered for the role of Senate president. Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Jibrin stated that based on the 1999 template, the next Senate president should come from the southeast geopolitical zone. Jibrin, who is set to represent Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency in Kano state at the 10th national assembly, made these comments as lawmakers begin their politicking ahead of the leadership elections. The elections are expected to take place in June, and many lawmakers are positioning themselves for key leadership positions in the Senate and House of Representatives. Given that both the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and vice president-elect, Kashim Shettima, are Muslims, there has been some debate about the need for religious balance in the national assembly leadership positions. Jibrin suggested that the positions of the deputy senate president and the speaker should be zoned to the north-central and northwest, respectively, while also stating that the number three position should go to a southern Christian.
