Religious Balancing In Leadership Positions Of The National Assembly.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, member-elect of the House of Representatives, says a northern Muslim should not be supported to become Senate president.

Abdulmumin Jibrin, who has been elected to the House of Representatives, has voiced his opinion that a northern Muslim should not be considered for the role of Senate president. Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Jibrin stated that based on the 1999 template, the next Senate president should come from the southeast geopolitical zone. Jibrin, who is set to represent Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency in Kano state at the 10th national assembly, made these comments as lawmakers begin their politicking ahead of the leadership elections. The elections are expected to take place in June, and many lawmakers are positioning themselves for key leadership positions in the Senate and House of Representatives. Given that both the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, and vice president-elect, Kashim Shettima, are Muslims, there has been some debate about the need for religious balance in the national assembly leadership positions. Jibrin suggested that the positions of the deputy senate president and the speaker should be zoned to the north-central and northwest, respectively, while also stating that the number three position should go to a southern Christian. In his view, anyone who believes that a northern Muslim should occupy the number three position does not love the country.

Jibrin Teaches Ganduje A Political Lesson In Recent Elections

In addition to his views on religious and regional balancing, Jibrin also discussed his recent feud with the governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje. According to Jibrin, he and other All Progressives Congress (APC) defectors were "pushed away" by the governor. However, Jibrin suggested that he and his fellow defectors "taught" Ganduje a political lesson during the recent general election. Despite not being wanted in the APC, Jibrin and his colleagues were able to regroup and emerge victorious, according to the lawmaker-elect. Overall, Jibrin's comments reflect the ongoing political maneuvering and debate surrounding the upcoming national assembly leadership elections. While some lawmakers are focused on regional and religious balance, others are positioning themselves for key leadership positions. Jibrin's recent feud with Ganduje also highlights the intra-party tensions and divisions that exist within the APC, which may continue to play out in the lead-up to the leadership elections.
